Proper maintenance can eliminate some problems before they start or get too bad. But other times, you may notice signs that something is not right. Strange sounds that come from your car are a good indication that your car may have problems that need to be addressed.
Before bringing your car in for service, you can get a sense of what may be wrong by using our guide.
Squeaky Brakes
If the brakes are working properly, they'll smoothly and quietly bring your vehicle to a stop. But if they make noises such as squeaking, there may be a problem. Squeaky brakes warrant a trip to the mechanic as the problem can quickly worsen if it's not addressed. Squeaking brakes can be caused by parts on the brakes wearing thin, such as the brake pads. If the brake pads wear out completely, they can cause the metal components on the brakes to rub together, which can severely damage the brakes. A mechanic can evaluate the brakes and either lubricate them or replace the brake pads to stop the squeaking and prevent more problems.
Engine Rattling
Rattling noises coming from the engine can indicate that there is an improper ratio of air and fuel in the engine cylinder. This can cause the piston to fire before it should, which is called pre-detonation or pre-ignition. This premature reaction can damage vital components, including the connecting rods, valves, and pistons.
Engine Clicking
An engine that makes clicking noises can have a problem with the upper valvetrain. This issue has several possible causes, such as worn or damaged components or excessive valve lash. The easier issue to check is low oil levels. If your car's engine is clicking, start by using a dipstick to check the oil levels. If the engine has enough oil, bring it to us for a more thorough inspection.
Knocking From Under the Hood
A knocking sound coming from under the hood can be a sign of a serious problem. If you hear this sound, it may indicate damage to one of several components, including the pistons, valves, or connecting rods. This problem means it's time to schedule repairs with a skilled mechanic as soon as possible.
Engine Squealing
A squealing engine can be caused by an accessory that goes bad, such as the idler bearing, water pump, or alternator. Usually, a roller bearing failure is the primary problem behind an issue with one of these critical engine parts.
